Strange Unusual was formed in Spring 2019. The name comes from one of Carmels favourite movies, Beetlejuice, in which one of the characters describes herself as ‘strange and unusual’. This name gave the pair the freedom to explore different instruments, acoustic and electric, and mix genres, which is something they are both drawn to. We want to inspire, encourage and connect with our fans around the world by creating some awesome music!! The groups first single, Never Meant To, was released in February 2020, and the pair are currently working on their first album.
Where are you based?
How long have you been making music?
SU formed in Spring 2019, although we have both been musicians for most of our lives, and performed together in a function group for several years before forming SU and writing our own music.
What genre would you consider your music to be?
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
Love of music from a very young age, fascination with how sound was made, watching musicians (such as David Bowie, Queen, Prince, Evanescence, The Beatles, Joy Division, Within Temptation, Placebo) and wanting to do the same. We were both very lucky in that we had families who loved music and introduced us to some amazing bands early on.
What are your biggest musical influences?
We are both inspired by our experiences with the world around us. Sometimes we will be inspired by a world event that has moved us, sometimes it will be our own experiences in life, love and loss. We both feel passionately that music will give us a voice and we should use that voice to try and make the world a better place by drawing attention to issues that matter to us.
Are you signed to a label or are you an independent artist?
Independant but hoping to be signed
What have been the biggest challenges in your music career?
My mental health has been my biggest challenge. I studied music, and worked hard to get into a music conservatoire. Unfortunately, I became very mentally ill during my first year and had a breakdown. I managed to complete my degree but my grades, and my confidence were effected. After Uni, I worked as a music teacher on a self employed basis, but still wanted to be a performer. It took me ten years to get myself to a point where I could handle the attention, constant workload and critique of a professional musician. In the end though, its just something I have to do-Carmel.
How many songs or albums have you released to date?
1 single, 1 album in process
Can you tell us a few things about your latest release?
Never Meant To celebrates individuality, which the group strongly believe in. Everyone is unique and should celebrate our differences, after all, we were never meant to fit in…!
