Jay J. Ra is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter whose genre-fluid artistry moves seamlessly between Pop, R&B, Afrobeat, Classical (Opera) and Gospel, uniting technical range with a storyteller’s emotional depth.

Born Dadrien Brown on May 11, 1987, in Kingston, Jamaica, he grew up surrounded by music: his father, a reggae artist and producer who worked with legends such as Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Errol Dunkley and Sanchez from the 1970s through the 2000s, passed down a rich musical legacy. Jay J. Ra began singing in church at eight, committed to a career in music by fourteen, and at twelve sang the lead to Kirk Franklin’s “Silver and Gold” with his community children’s choir on a broadcast on Roots FM, a popular Jamaican radio station. At twenty he recorded his first demo, “Can You Feel,” and in 2008 he performed “We Are the World” with local artists as an opening act for the Australian soft-rock duo Air Supply at the Food For The Poor Children for Charity concert in Kingston.

In 2009 he relocated to Toronto to study at York University, where he sang tenor with the York University Gospel Choir, performed as a baritone in the Male Vocal Ensemble, and trained in classical singing and staged performance. This formal training sharpened the versatility that now defines his sound.

Performing first as D.bé Jayri, he released four albums, beginning with the 2016 EP Soul Glimpse, followed by Glorious, Beautiful and Black, Happy Kwanzaa, A Soulful Christmas (2020) and I Am (2022). Adopting the name Jay J. Ra in 2024, after tracing his ancestral roots to Kwahu, Ghana, he legally changed his surname to Amen-Ra and entered a new artistic chapter. His releases under the new name include “One Day at a Time” (2024), cowritten with Jamall Pierre and produced by Nigerian producer Chiosa Fred; “Sweet Stories 2” (2025), featuring Ghanaian artist African Child with a solo version produced by Ghanaian producer Dan Bassey; “Change” (2025), a Pop/Soul/Rock single co-written with Victoria Sola of Nigeria and produced by Chiosa Fred, introduced on vinyl at Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar in New York; the September 2025 singles “Time” and “Don’t You Worry”; and the LP Music Is Life, released May 30, 2026.

His performance history spans three continents: Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar in New York (since 2019), The Bitter End in New York (2019), a solo concert at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto (2017), and Palace Afrika in Accra, Ghana (2023).
With a catalog that spans genres and continents, and a voice rooted in cultural heritage and modern innovation, Jay J. Ra is more than a singer-songwriter: his music bridges cultures and resonates with audiences worldwide.
